Walla Walla: Dinner at Saffron

This is one in a series of posts about our recent trip to Walla Walla over a long weekend. It covers dinner on Saturday evening at Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen with our old friend Dimitri and a group of new friends.

Picking restaurants at random is a bit of a crapshoot: you win some and you lose some. I'm not sure who picked this restaurant, but it was on Ann's and my short list and we were excited to try it. Although the menu sounded interesting, the execution wasn't there and I don't think any of the six of us in our group was particularly happy with dinner at Saffron. For myself, some cheese and crackers back at the Wesley would have been better.

To recap, a lot of dishes were not as flavorful as they could have been, many needed more salt, one steak was super-charred, and although our server was charming, we really did not merit the third-degree when asking for salt, which we had to do twice to get enough salt for the table. Physically, it was very hot in the restaurant and therefore uncomfortable for those of us who were dressed for fall weather. And all the dishes came out of the kitchen randomly, making it rather awkward for our group.

On the plus side, the decor was sparing but tasteful, the pasta was cooked correctly, the wine list was pretty nice especially for local wines, and I really liked my appetizer of kibbeh.

Creste di Galle Pasta, Well Cooked,
But the Lamb and Beef Ragù Lacked Salt and Flavor
Unfortunately, despite the fun-sounding menu, this is one place that we are sure to skip on our next visit to Walla Walla. You never know until you try.
