Oregon Coast: Happy Hour at Yachats State Park

From Heceta Head Lighthouse, we continued north to our room in Yachats, fronting Highway 101 and the Yachats River. Having discussed over lunch at Gratitude Brewing in Eugene that we should have an oceanside dinner in Yachats, we stopped in Veneta and bought salami, cheese, and crackers to accompany the to-go beer that we bought at lunch. After we unpacked, we grabbed two folding chairs, an oilcan of beer, and our dinner and set out for the quarter-mile walk along the Yachats River to the oceanfront Yachats State Park.

Our walk took us due west down Ocean View Drive alongside the Yachats River to the point where the river dumped into the ocean. At the park, cliffs rose a few feet above the ocean and lava rocks below, sometimes visible in the fog, sometimes less so. We set up our chairs on a patch of grass and snacked our dinner away watching the sun drop through the fog steadily to the horizon.

After we'd had our fill of watching the sun sink ever lower, we reversed our course back along the river to our room. As we walked, the fog came and went. Ultimately as we got within a few yards of Highway 101, the sun came out brightly and we heard a Bald Eagle call. We found it and I took many photos of it and another perched in a Sitka Spruce.

Back at our room, we didn't stay up late because we had an early morning followed by a full day planned for Thursday.
