Impromptu Lunch

Sunday we were putzing around the house, weeding and watering the garden and generally taking it easy, but trying to get our outdoor stuff done before the scorching heat of the day. Ann called her parents to check on them because they still had not regained power after that crazy storm that came screaming through on Friday night. Our power came back after 7 hours, but Bob and Mary had been out for days. With no good estimate for their power to be restored, they decided to come stay with us.

They arrived around 12:30 or 1:00 and we all needed to eat, so Ann pulled some pizza dough out of the fridge, while I rooted around for something to go on top. I pulled a fennel from the garden and found a small piece of pancetta, a small piece of parmigiano reggiano cheese, and an onion.

Fennel from the Garden
The fennel in the garden is all volunteer from last year and it hasn't formed a bulb. The entire plant is pretty much inedible except for the fronds. Oh well, I've never had much luck growing fennel. Pity.

A Baked Pie with Rapini
Mary brought some rapini so I cooked it. Ann doesn't like it, but it's one of my favorite vegetables. Not too bad for an unexpected and impromptu lunch.
